Wireless debugging greyed out? Turn it on from the phone.
Android 11 and later hide ADB behind a wireless debugging switch that greys out exactly when you need it: no Wi-Fi joined, radio off, or a manufacturer build that insists on an active connection. Shizuku cannot start without it. Here is why it greys out, the manual fix, and how DPHMS Helper forces the switch on with no computer involved.
Why the switch is greyed out
- Wi-Fi radio is off. Wireless debugging is a Wi-Fi-based ADB endpoint, so Android disables the switch with the radio.
- No network joined. Many builds (Moto, Samsung, Pixel alike) keep the switch greyed until a Wi-Fi network is actually connected, even if one is saved.
- Developer options not enabled. The toggle does nothing until you unlock the Developer options screen.
- Captive-portal networks. Hotel and public Wi-Fi with a sign-in page can hold the switch greyed or kill debugging the moment it turns on.
The manual fix (free)
- Turn Wi-Fi on in quick settings and join any network (your hotspot with data disabled works too).
- Open Settings → About and tap Build number seven times to unlock Developer options.
- Settings → System → Developer options → Wireless debugging → on. Use "Pair device with pairing code" once for Shizuku.
Repeat after every reboot, every Wi-Fi drop, and every airplane-mode toggle. This is the part that gets old.
The automatic fix: DPHMS Helper
Helper v1.5.24 reads the wireless-debugging state straight from the system and forces the switch on in three tiers, in order:
- Direct system write. Grant WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS once over USB ("adb shell pm grant com.dphms.helper android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS") and from then on Helper flips the switch itself, 100% hands-off, with Shizuku completely dead.
- Shizuku shell. If a Shizuku session happens to be alive, Helper re-asserts the setting through it, verified up to three passes.
- Guided watch. If neither can, Helper opens the right screen (radio first on greyed-switch phones) and watches the switch for up to four minutes, continuing automatically the moment you flip it.
LOCAL MODE runs the whole flow with no Wi-Fi network at all: radio up, wireless debugging forced on, then Shizuku pairs with the phone itself over 127.0.0.1. No internet needed, no splash pages, no captive portals.
Get it
Helper is $0.49 and the source is available. It also keeps Shizuku alive across reboots, Wi-Fi drops and battery saves, handles captive-portal sign-ins, and brings you back to setup with a floating button.
